Serving the City of Hartford for over twenty
two years through the Hartford Police Department
Assistant Chief Jose Luis Lopez Sr. retired as of
August 3, 2007 to become Chief of the Durham,
North Carolina Police Department.
During his career with the Hartford Police
Department, Chief Lopez supervised and commanded
nearly every division within the Police
Department. Prior to being appointed Assistant
Chief, Chief of Detectives and Chief of Patrol by
Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts, he served as Deputy
Chief of South Division encompassing the
neighborhoods of Downtown, Barry Square,
Southeast, Southend, Parkville, Behind the Rocks,
South Green, Southwest, Frog Hollow and South
Meadows.
As Chief of Detectives, Assistant Chief Lopez
oversees all investigative functions of the
department, including the Major Crimes, Juvenile
Investigative, Crime Scene, Intelligence, and Vice
and Narcotics Divisions.
As Chief of Patrol,
Assistant Chief has responsibility for the overall
management and deployment of uniformed police
personnel and emergency resources of the
department and homeland security functions. The
HPD's Traffic Division, Bomb Squad, Disorder
Control Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Tactical
Vehicles/Logistics Unit, Special Events Unit,
Emergency Response Team, Tactical Medical Team,
Marine Unit and K-9/Animal Control Unit are also
under Chief Lopez' command
Assistant Chief Lopez
holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice
from John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a
minor in Police Science. He is a graduate of the
F.B.I. National Academy and earned a certificate
from the Criminal Justice Command Institute in
Supervisory Leadership. He is a certified
instructor with the Police Officers Standards and
Training Council and is certified to teach in over
twelve Law Enforcement subjects. He was one of
the city’s first Community Service Officers and
continues to advocate for Community Policing. He
is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in
Public Policy at Trinity College in Hartford.
Born in Brooklyn, New
York, Assistant Chief Lopez served in the United
States Air Force as a Law Enforcement Specialist
and received an honorable discharge in 1980. He
has been married to Rebecca Lopez, a retired
Hartford Police Officer with twenty-one years of
service, for more than 30 years. Both entered the
department in 1983 and were both sworn in on the
same date. Assistant Chief Lopez and his wife,
Retired Officer Rebecca Lopez have been featured
in the television series “Top Cops”.
Committed to the community
he serves, Assistant Chief Lopez is currently
Board President for the Hartford Neighborhood
Centers and has been a board member since 1988.
His involved in many community activities and
causes led to Assistant Chief Lopez receiving the
2005 Maria Sanchez Community Service Award for
Humanitarianism.
