H.O.P.E. in coalition with Blue Hills Civic Association, Laurel Corner Neighborhood Association and several other groups held a meeting to Reopen the Library branch last Thursday, July 24. Mayor Perez, Councilman Deustch and Cotto, Louise Blalock, Gerry Sullivan and several other library board members were present. We asked them to reopen the libraries. It only costs $100,000 to pay for the rent and utilities for both branches and we asked the city to find that money. We believe with reassigned staffing, all the branches could be open with each branch giving up some hours and we asked the library board and Louise to figure that out. We have asked the Board and city to respond by Friday, August 1 to our demands. If you are interested in getting involved, please call HOPE at 523-4870.

H.O.P.E.

Single Mothers on the Move held a meeting June 23 with the Commissioner of Social Services who agreed that the child care program Care4Kids will provide payments when a parent provides a letter from an employer so the person does not have to wait for pay stubs. Also, Care4Kids does cover child care during third shift and will pay for a family member who does not live in the household with the children to provide the child care. The Commissioner also agreed to provide receipts to recipients when they turn in paperwork or mail in paperwork because many people are having benefits cut off due to loss of paperwork and computer error. If you are interested in getting involved, please call 523-4870.

H.O.P.E. is also working on Tenants rights.....
A resolution to get an ordinance against harassment by landlords has been introduced and is being considered by the Housing Committee. For more information about our work on Section Eight Reform and a National housing Justice movement, please call 523-4870.

Public Safety

TIPS;

1. Keep your home well lit. Motion-sensing lights are a great, energy-saving option; 2. Use a security system. Many burglars wait until folks leave their homes for an opportunity; 3. Be aware. Keep an eye out for your neighbors as well; 4. Call the Hartford Police Dept. if you notice anything that needs attention. When HPD sees a pattern, they can allocate more resources to an area to solve whatever problem exists.

Numbers to Call:

Crime Tip Line: (860) 527-TIPS (8477)

Gun Tip Line: (860) 525-GUNS (4867)

Drug Tip Line: (860) 525-DRUG (3784)

*Tip Lines allow the caller to remain anonymous if they want.

Please report emergencies to 911. Please report other crimes and/or suspicious behavior to the dispatch non-emergency line at 527-6300. Please also make a call to your local community service officer. West End: Officer Powell at 424-2034. Asylum Hill: Officer Jim Barrett at 777-7533.

If you would like to pass on information via email, please contact the undersigned. We do not currently have email communication with the police department.

David Jorgensen, Chair @ 860-670-5454. Email: jorgie54@comcast.net
