HARTFORD POLICE CONFIRM CAPTURE OF MURDER SUSPECT DEREK HUMBLE

(Hartford) - Hartford Police today confirmed the capture of Derek Humble (DOB 5/12/82), wanted by Hartford Police in connection with the March 24, 2004 shooting death of Victor Blue of 197 Westland Street, Hartford.

Humble was apprehended by the Jones County Sheriff's Office in the city of Laurel, Mississippi, on March 31, 2004.  Jones County Deputy Sheriff Chris Smith was responding to assist another officer in the city of Laurel, Mississippi, when he was approached by a citizen with information that Humble was staying with his father.  Deputy Sheriff Smith acted upon this information and was able to take Derek Humble into custody at his father's house without incident. 

Humble is currently being held in the Jones County Jail and will be extradited to Connecticut where he faces pending charges of Murder, Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, and Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit.  The weapon, a 9 mm handgun, used in the shooting, has not yet been recovered.  Humble's bond has been set at Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($750,000).

In commenting on the apprehension of Humble by the Jones County Sheriff's Office, Hartford Police Acting Chief Mark Pawlina stated, "We commend the quick action of Deputy Sheriff Chris Smith which resulted in the apprehension of Humble.  We are indeed thankful for his actions and the assistance of the entire Jones County Sheriff's Office in capturing Humble without incident, thereby removing a dangerous fugitive from both their community and ours.  The people of Jones County have our deepest appreciation."
