REMEMBERS HPD FALLEN HEROES ON NATIONAL PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY
(Hartford) - On this National Peace Officers
Memorial Day, Tuesday, May 15th, Hartford Police Chief Daryl K. Roberts is
asking the entire Hartford community to remember our fallen heroes, those
Hartford Police Officers who gave the ultimate, their lives, to protect the
residents of the City of Hartford.
"It is important on this national day of
remembrance that we take a moment in Hartford to remember our fallen heroes.
Since 1911 seven (7) Hartford Police Officers have given the ultimate, their
lives, to serve and protect us. I ask that we all take a moment to
remember these seven fallen heroes, " said Chief Roberts.
Coincidently, May 15th, is also is the
anniversary of the death of Hartford Police Officer Thomas Toohey, who died
on May 15, 1996 when he suffered a heart attack while partaking in an
undercover investigation in Hartford's Frog Hollow neighborhood. Since
1911 seven (7) Hartford Police Officers have lost their lives in the line of
duty.

Officer Thomas Knevet
Thomas Knevet Memorial Stone

Officer Knevet became a regular police officer on
October 23, 1911. He became the first officer of the Hartford
Police Department to be killed in the line of duty, when he was
struck by an automobile, on November 27, 1919. Knevet was recognized
by the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. in 1994,
for having the longest record of continuous service with a single
law enforcement agency of any officer killed in the line of duty in
the Unites States.

Officer Henry Jennings
Henry Jennings Memorial Stone

Officer Jennings was appointed a patrolman on February 29, 1960.
His life came to a tragic end when he was killed while trying to
apprehend a criminal suspect on May 25, 1964.

Officer John Daley
John Daley Memorial Stone

Officer Daley was appointed a patrolman October 13, 1970. His
life came to a tragic end when his revolver discharged at the scene
of a police operation while taking cover from a man armed with a
shotgun on July 29, 1977. |
Detective Edward Cody
Edward Cody Memorial Stone

Detective Cody joined the Hartford Police Department on October
26, 1952. He was promoted to the rank of Detective on November 1,
1970. His life came to a tragic end during a hold-up of an armored
truck on April 16, 1979.
