Hartford Police Asks Motorists to Slow Down in City School Zones

(Hartford) -
The Hartford Police Department's Traffic Division and it's 95 school crossing guards are asking city motorists and commuters to be aware and alert to the dangers of speeding, running traffic lights, and breaching pedestrian crossings as school begins for Hartford's more than 22,000 students on Monday, August 25, 2008.  A large percentage of Hartford school children walk to and from their neighborhood schools.

This school year 95 school crossing guards, dressed in lime green safety vests, will be posted at 89 different locations throughout the city to ensure children can cross streets safely.  The areas where they have experienced the most traffic problems in the past have been the intersections of Asylum Avenue and Sigourney Street, New Britain Avenue and Newington Avenue and Park Street and New Park Avenue, all major routes for traffic flowing in and out of the city.

"Drivers near schools can help create a safe environment for our children walking to and from school by watching for school crossing guards, yielding to their signals, obeying the speed limits in school zones, coming to a complete stop at traffic signals and stop signs, and not blocking pedestrian crosswalks," said HPD Traffic Division Commander Lieutenant William F. Long, III.
