FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 15, 2003

HARTFORD CRACK DEALER RECEIVES 10 YEAR SENTENCE

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ARMANDO SILVESTRE-CONTRERAS, 27, was sentenced today to 120 months (10 years) imprisonment and 5 years of supervised release for his conviction on federal drug charges.  The sentence was imposed by Senior U.S. District Judge Peter C. Dorsey in New Haven.

SILVESTRE-CONTRERAS was deported to the Dominican Republic after sustaining a drug conviction in 2001.  He reentered the United States illegally, however, and continued to sell drugs.  SILVESTRE-CONTRERAS subsequently pleaded guilty in federal court to distributing 50 grams or more of cocaine base ("crack").  The charges stemmed from a Drug Enforcement Administration and Hartford Police Department investigation into crack cocaine distribution in Hartford's south end.  In September 2002, SILVESTRE-CONTRERAS sold two ounces of crack cocaine to an informant and, a week later, was arrested by DEA agents on Wethersfield Avenue while in possession of approximately 125 grams of crack cocaine.

"This prosecution is an example of our continuing commitment to assist local law enforcement when necessary in investigating and prosecuting drug crimes in all of Connecticut's cities and towns," U.S. Attorney O'Connor stated.

This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Hartford Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Gustafson.
